Duties and Responsibilities:

Popular Praxis is seeking volunteers. This position begins in June and has the possibility of extending into the next semester (i.e. September) and has a flexible start date. Volunteers will devote most of their attention to the Rhode Island Social Movement Oral History Project, which involves interviewing activists involved in Rhode Island's social movements. General duties and responsibilities include:

 -Identifying possible activists for interviewing. Building relationships with activists and preparing thoughtful and relevant questions.

-Coordinating, conducting, recording, transcribing, and disseminating interviews with elders affiliated with Rhode Island social movements.

-Editing video interviews and publishing them on YouTube. Working with local organizations and educational institutions to disseminate this project.

 -Miscellaneous tasks include: facilitating volunteer trainings, attending weekly meetings with the Coordinator and other volunteers, and conducting outreach regarding the RI Social Movement Oral History Project.

 Qualifications/Requirements:

Popular Praxis encourages all students to apply, regardless of previous work experience. A strong applicant will have:

-Good communication skills, both verbal and written. Editorial (video, journalistic, or historical) experience a plus, but not required.

-Computer literacy (Proficiency with Microsoft Office, social media, Internet research, note taking, website design, video editing, and YouTube will be especially useful).

-Attention to detail and ability to keep track of multiple tasks at once.

-Historical research skills. Although we welcome applications from students with any academic background, History concentrators with archival and/or oral history experience are especially encouraged to apply. (Other concentrations we're particularly interested in hearing from include: Africana Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Urban Studies, Anthropology, Gender & Sexuality Studies, Public Policy, and Public Health).  

-An interest in or demonstrated commitment to social justice issues in Rhode Island (community and/or student organizing experience are a plus, but not required).

-Bi-lingual Spanish fluency strongly preferred, but not required.

-Access to a car is a plus.

Time Commitment:

Position requires 2-20 hours per week, but is highly flexible. Ability to work some weekends and nights preferred.
